Halifax Humanities 101

• Halifax Humanities 101 is the core program presented by Halifax Humanities 101. This eight-month program of study encompasses a chronological curriculum focusing on “Great Books” of Western culture.

• The curriculum is divided into five Sections. Click on the underlined Section below to view the detailed curriculum for that Section:

• Contemporary European and North American culture
• The Modern World
• Renaissance and Reformation
• The Middle Ages and Christendom
• The Ancient World

            Included among the texts studied are the following:

• David Adams Richards: Mercy Among the Children
• F.Scott Fitzgerald: The Great Gatsby
• Friedrich Nietzsche: excerpts from The Birth of Tragedy
• Martin Luther: On the Freedom of A Christian
• Dante’s Divine Comedy
• The Confessions of St. Augustine
• Homer’s Odyssey
• Plato’s Republic
• The Epic of Gilgamesh

• Books are provided and by the end of the program each student will have acquired 10 – 15 additions to their personal libraries.

• All classes are taught by university professors who donate their time and expertise.
